Shelter is required by all living organisms.

Many rodents store food in their underground burrows so that they can eat while the weather is inclement (bad). They can hide from predators, too.

Many snakes are picked up and eaten by raptors while dozing atop warming stones. So they also go underground to escape from predators.

How big is a platypus's den?

Platypuses do not live in dens, but rather in burrows. A platypus's burrow extends up to 30 metres, or 100 feet, into a riverbank. The burrow is only large enough for the platypus - and snakes - to crawl into. Females have a chamber at the end of the burrow for nesting, but this is just large enough for the female to curl around her eggs.
