Before his crucifixion, the Roman soldiers mocked Jesus by dressing him a "robe of scarlet".
Actually, prior to Vatican II, it was the custom to cover all statues and paintings in the church with violet from Passion Sunday until the Vigil Mass on Easter Sunday as a symbol of penance and sorrow. No flowers or any other form of decoration was allowed during these days also. Some churches still follow the custom today.
