There are many reasons for the volunteer supervisors and others editing answers, but censorship should never be one of them. If an answer is truly edited strictly to censor information, then the answer can be returned to the question. WikiAnswers does have guidelines for answering questions. If those guidelines are not followed, they are edited to bring them into compliance with our guidelines. Our supervisors know the guidelines and adhere to them. Some of the reasons answers might be edited, moved to the Discussion Page, or removed completely are: 1. The answer does not answer the question. 2. The answer presents a debate, makes comments directed toward another user and not the answer that was given by that contributor, etc. 3. Uses a heading such as "That is Wrong," "The Truth of the Matter," etc. 4. The answer contains false information. 5. The answer is spam or vandalism. no
Perhaps because the answer given did not (a) answer the question, (b) was insulting, (c) was nonsense or (d) was offensive. Even though WikiAnswers promotes the concept of 'openness' - everyone is still expected to show a little common sense in their contributions. I, as an admin myself, constantly remove answers that fall into one of the above categories. People come here for answers to their questions - they do not expect to be insulted for asking what may seem a very easy question to answer !
Yes
ABSOLUTELY NOT! Are they crazy?
They are trying to censor the internet.
WikiAnswers is a private website. It is a private company which decides what content is appropriate for its pages. Because the company decides its own policies, the supervisors are obligated to follow the company rules.
The Supervisors of WikiAnswers remove inappropriate content such as profanity, obscenity, cyberbullying and pornography to protect the people who visit the site. We are an educational questions and answers website which is visited by people of all ages from all over the globe. Therefore we strive to keep our website a family-friendly place where people can visit without fear of being bullied. We only censor what is against the rules to place here or what is against the law.
You're very right. The first amendment of the US is "freedom of speech." However, not every country follows the United States Constitution. In fact, I believe the US is the only that has a United States Constitution. Despite this, companies, businesses, organizations, etc, are all allowed to have a Terms of Use or similar contract. WikiAnswers has one all on its own; it may resemble some, but not others. By using this service, you are agreeing to ours. Anyway, should an answer violate our Terms of Use, it is our inclination to alter an answer with no prejudice or discrimination against the poster(s) to make it stay within those guidelines. A copy of our Terms of Use is linked to the bottom of every page within WikiAnswers.
Israel censors Holocaust-denial websites. This is the extent of it, after a failed law change attempt.
We do not censor the site. The only things that are removed are answers that are totally incorrect, inappropriate actions such as bullying, cursing, or "hotlinking" from the answer itself. That's not censoring, it's keeping the site correct and mature. If you feel your answers have been censored, alert any supervisor and we'll look into it -- please provide the specific answers so we can check them out.
neither schools nor any particular individual or other such group has ownership of the internet. they have no right to censor what does not even belong to them and the guidelines for said censorship are often faulty and poorly worded. i would understand if there is a rule against adult content like porn, but instead schools attempt to stifle everything from social media, to games, to websites that disagree with their point of view on this subject. TL;DR: nobody owns the internet and therefore nobody has the right to censor or otherwise control it.
The only way I could think of doing that is to go to your internet browsing settings and block inappropriate pictures.
