Rabbits teeth are continually growing and they need to chew on hard substances to ensure the teeth do not grow out of control. You should only allow rabbits to chew on untreated fruit wood. So offcuts of apple trees etc are a good source. In the wild rabbits will often dig up roots as a food source.

Rabbits eat wood because they have a natural desire to chew wood: an instinct.

Rabbit teeth grow all the time, throughout their whole lives, and they're worn down by chewing. If a rabbit doesn't chew rough, fibrous material (like wood), their teeth will overgrow and the rabbit won't be able to eat anything, and he or she will eventually starve to death.

The best thing to keep a bunny's teeth worn down is actually hay. Hay is also really good for a rabbit's digestion because it's very high in fibre. The best way to keep your rabbit happy and healthy is to make sure he or she has access to fresh grass hay all day, every day. Twigs and wood is also good for keeping the teeth worn down.

Not all wood is safe for rabbits. Don't let your bunny nibble on furniture, because that wood has paint, varnish, or other chemicals on it and these aren't safe for rabbits. Softwoods like cedar and pine can also be dangerous, because the phenols (the chemicals that make the wood smell so nice) can be toxic and lead to liver damage. Make sure the wood your bunny nibbles on is safe!

What parts of trees do birds and animals eat?

Trees consist of bark, wood, leaves and roots. Some animals eat the leaves e.g. giraffes, some eat bark and wood e.g. beavers or various worms and some eat the roots e.g. worms, beetles and other underground creatures. So birds and animals eat the whole tree. Actually, I'm surprised that there still are any trees, considering that every single part of them gets eaten by one animal or another.
