Why do some animals have long ears?

I personally think that animals have big ears because they can hear carefully like if a predator is sneaking up to it's prey then they would be able to escape.

On a whole, the animals that have small ears live in cold places. They have adapted to have small ears to reduce surface area. The smaller the ear, the less skin is exposed to the cold, so the loose less body heat.

Just like people turn their head to get a better idea of sound that's quiet or off in the distance. Sometimes for other reasons too, like a little fly may have landed on it or something.
