Why do some chicks have matted eyes that are closed shut. There are no other symptoms. Some become weak by not eating or drinking and have dies. Can someone out there help?

The matted eyes can be several different problems. One is dehydration the chicks never found the water that is available to them. Best to dip each birds beak into the water to help them find the water, bright lighting helps the birds to find water also the addition of marbles to the water helps attract the birds to the water. The other issue that can cause matted eyes is salmonella. Not much can be done to treat, it is usually associated with puss along with the matte eyes. It is best to remove these so as not to infect the others.
