Actually most clouds don't rain. Many clouds are high in the atmosphere, where it is below freezing point, and thus are ice clouds. You can spot these, for their edges are rather diffuse.

The clouds that most commonly rain are the cumulus clouds and their kin, which are close to land surface. These clouds have very definite edges, and are often very dark.

Sometimes rain will fall from a cloud, but fails to reach the ground as it is absorbed by drier or warmer air below. This interrupted rainfall is called virga.
