There used to be (I don't know if they are still in operation) a company called "Madison" which used to build silos out of a special shape of concrete block. The trademark checkerboard pattern at the top was simply a decoration. The workers just painted a few of the blocks white before construction, then when they got to the top two courses (or rows) of blocks, they just slipped those white ones into every other slot. The crews were very experienced, and had the ability to erect a 25 foot diameter, 80 foot high silo in a single day. A Madison silo was a very stable and long-lived structure and usually cost much less than the big blue ones ("Harvestore" brand). They were even known to have survived smaller tornados.
See the related link below to see a photo of a couple Madison silos next to an old barn.

Storage silos are cylindrical structures. They are more commonly used for bulk storage of grain, silage, coal, cement, carbon black, woodchips, food products and sawdust. Three types of silos are in widespread use today - tower silos, bunker silos and bag silos.
They usually use them to store grain in large quantities.

it was origanly used for glass making.
Silos are used for storing many kinds of bulk goods e.g. coal, cement, wood chips, etc. But silos are probably most commonly used for storing grain of for the storage of a fermented form of whole plant feed called silage. Thus silos will be most often found in rural agricultural areas. Driving across the great planes for example just about every town you pass will have a grain elevator which consists of a number of silos. These can be seen for miles and indicate the location of every small town.
The plural of silo is silos.
Trucks to haul the grain, silos to store the grain, machines to grind the grain, other machines to bag the flour, more trucks to deliver the flour, and probably many more.
Dominic of Silos was born in 1000.
