Well it's probably because he just wants to look cool/tough or just not look like a sissy, it's a gender thing, men need to have their pride, although there is more pride telling the truth or doing the right thing in front of their friends than 'acting differently'.
They are insecure and are afraid they can't be their true selves with their friends. Not all people are like this though. Though on the other side being with other males might make that a bit more... testosterone filled, and foolish. and when there alone there most calm and quiet.
---- The reason for this, however, is because of peer pressure. Naturally, somebody who wants to "fit in" can't do some of what he/she does, as they are afraid of possibly embarrassing themselves.
If you think about it, all people tend to act differently around certain people. It's funny, because in my Youth group, you can see the attitudes change when the youth pastor enters the room. You can take this into consideration, and if you don't like this about guys, or people in general, notice when YOU are doing this, and try not to be that way... be genuine!

Boys try to act cool in front of friends at all times. They probably like you just not around their friends. Its like girls to fit in you have to be mean to other girls. It is very wrong, but that is also the truth about these days. -cassie
Girls may act differently around boys due to societal expectations, social conditioning, or personal experiences. They may feel pressure to conform to gender stereotypes, seek approval, or feel nervous or self-conscious. It is important to recognize that each individual is unique and their behavior can be influenced by a variety of factors.
boys want girls to act sexy to them but only them no other boy or apparently the girls are cheating on them. Boys want to girls kiss them in front of there friends but no flirting with no other boys
he/she will act differently around you than around other girl/boys.
because they try to act like they like you in front of you then act like they dont in front of their pals/friends/boys/ or whatever you want to call them ----to all you guys out there if i were u i would ask the girl out (the worst thing she can say is no!!:P)

Indeed they do. As the French would say, "Viva la difference"!
Some times boys try to act a certain way in front of their friends, and talking to girls made be hard for them as their friends may laugh at him. This is no exscue, if a boy likes you or wants to talk to you he shouldn't care what his friends say
some boys do and do not but usually yes they do.
because that's just how SOME are and its stupid but there are ones out there that won't do that you just gotta find him and instead of acting stupid around his friends he will be respectful of you and sweet and that when you no if he really truly likes you.
