I wish I knew the answer to that!
It's been done since the beginning of time, and thankfully, there are some religions and cultures that don't allow it. Sadly, it still happens.
Every case is different:
1. Abuse - many people bury themselves in sex, drugs, alcohol, and smoking to try to numb the pain.
2. Watching other people with unhealthy habits - your parents are your first role models, and they're NOT always good ones!
3. Being told at school it's cool to do unhealthy things and you won't accepted if you don't do them.
4. Lack of education - sadly, not everyone knows and understands the risks involved with risky behaviors.
5. "Feeling like it." - Some people simply don't care.
