I often wonder what makes people addicts?
Is it life or just life general.
The main reason why some people get addicted to alcohol is to block out their problems. Consuming large amounts of alcohol on a regular basis leaves you in a state of oblivion, and if you can't think clearly then you won't think about whatever problems are bothering you. Alcohol becomes a physical dependency as well as an emotional one.
There are many theories as to why some people who drink alcohol become alcoholic whereas the vast majority do not. there are physical, psychological social, nutritional and many other theories, but none have proven to be correct.
Because after drinking enough, for long enough, changes occur in the brain that cause the person to need to continue drinking in order to maintain some semblance of physical and emotional comfort. As the disease progresses, the moments of comfort become fewer, but the terror of what happens when they stop drinking becomes greater.
People stop drinking only when their fear of what it is doing to them becomes greater than their fear of quitting.
Google Nora Volkow. She has some great scientific explanation why people get addicted to substances.
That is the subject of considerable debate.

There will be a large cost in drugs and alcohol.
Not necessarily. Usually people just start drinking daily and get addicted. I guess you can sub-consciously choose to but you would have to be pretty immature to consciously choose to be addicted.
