The present phase of global warming, even though rapid by comparison with previous, natural climate change events, is nevertheless so slow that the ordinary person can be unaware that it is occurring. Certainly, the last ten years have been the warmest since instrumental readings began in 1850, but no one has such a long experience and no one can be sure that recent temperatures have been warmer on average than they were a few decades ago. There is good reason for some people not to believe that global warming is really happening unless they actively seek to be informed by climate experts. And there are always some who push misinformation in the hope of convincing the general public that global warming is not really happening.
On the other hand, some believe in the reality of global warming because they have taken the trouble to be informed of the clear consensus among climate scientists that it is happening. They are aware that polar sea ice is melting and that sea levels are rising. These are people who may not understand the details of the science, but they accept the advice of scientists.

I believe that some people misunderstand the science and this misunderstanding leads them to believe that trained research scientists must be wrong in their conclusions. In other cases, I believe that some people simply do not want to know that global warming is caused by human activities. Imagine for example someone who thinks that his job could be at risk if we try to prevent any further global warming: such a person would very probably deny the reality of global warming.
