What are three differences between a frog and a tadpole?

The first difference is that a tadpole (after being hatched) has gills because its body has not developed enough muscular structure to survive on land, so it live underwater, the frog however breaths through lungs (mature frogs cannot breath underwater). Second, a tadpole has a tail, while a frog is tailless. Third, a tadpole does not have any legs (until later in life) while a frog has very long hind legs for leaping.

Why the tadpole has a different breathing method than the adult frog?

A tadpole breaths using external gills, taking oxygen from the water, and must remain underwater. As the tadpole develops, it absorbs the tail, grows four limbs, and begin to breath air through internal lungs. As an adult, a frog spends much time in the open air, under damp places, and will only return to the water to mate, or as a refuge if threatened, or to hibernate in the muddy floor of the pond during winter. When hibernating at the bottom of a pond, frogs breath through their skin, while their body functions are reduced to a minimum, torpid state.
