I've known a girl since childhood, now an adult, who has always spoken out loud pieces of what seem to be daydream conversation. Little things, or I, or other people will snap her back to reality but in the mean time, her emotions and facial expressions show that she is really engaged in what would look like rehearsing lines if she were holding a script. But she is not an actress, in fact she has always been a little shy of public speaking. She is not anti-social however and has no handicaps in that area. She is a normal functioning kind of person, but every now and then, she's just...somewhere else until she gets brought back. I have always wondered if that is from stress, or if she is coping with being in a situation she is not comfortable so her brain takes over and "puts her" some place else...but I can not say that is true. I am an art major myself, and have no insights into the studies of pscycology. She is very dear to many of those who call her friend and has never posed a threat.

I just wanted to say also that if its a child, it has often been found that children often have an imaginary friend, and dont take this at first glance. By friend, i dont necesarrily mean somone who is human size, or out in the world. It could be that its someone inside their own head, maybe an identical form of themselces. It is often for confirmation of something, or preparation for when you about to talk to somone about an uneasy subject. Listening to our own auditory memory helps often heps us to remember or understand a complex sentence. Many do it, and it rarely does reflect a mental disorder. I hope this helped.

Talking to oneself can be a way of organizing thoughts, problem-solving, or providing self-soothing reassurance. It can also help individuals process emotions or thoughts verbally to better understand and regulate their inner experiences. In some cases, it can be a habit or coping mechanism for those who feel lonely or disconnected.
