A positive displacement (reciprocating) compressor has at least 4 valves on each cylinder. 2 intakes and 2 exhaust valves. Unloader valves on these compressors close the intake valves on these compressors so that they do not continue to draw air (or gas) into the system when the operating pressure of the system is reached. These unloaders are typical pressure switch controlled solenoids that hold the valves shut until released. They prevent overpressurizing the system which would result in safety valves being activated or damage to the system.

With the intakes shut no additional air is added to the system and the compressor continues running unloaded, alternately compressing and uncompressing the air remaining in the cylinders.

A positive displacement (screw) compressor unloader valve operates similarly, shutting off the intake air to prevent overpressurizing the system.

A centrifugal compressor does not require the unloader valve as it will not continue building pressure beyond its rated capacity.

What is meant by loading and unloading in air compressor?

In an air compressor, there are devices that automatically stops the compressor from compressing air. A mechanical unloader is sometimes installed in large air compressors such that air valves are open when the set pressure is attained. When this happens, the drive motor continues running but no air pressurre is pumped to the receiving tank during the unloading period. When the pressure in the tank is reduced to a set level, the air valves in the compressor automatically closes and air pressure is again developed, this called pressure loading. In many oinstances, compressors are contolled only by pressure switches to automatically stop the drive motor at a set pressure and restart at a lower pressure.

An unloading valve (or switch) is designed to cycle the machine (typically a compressor) when it reaches control pressure, by cutting off the air supply to the machine, so that there is no air being compressed. A relief valve is placed on the outlet from the machine, or the inlet to the machine being supplied the compressed air (or hydraulics, for hydraulic systems) such that, if the machine over-pressures the system, the relief valve opens and dumps the excess pressure back to the inlet side of the machine, to a holding tank or some other receptacle. For air compressors it could dump air to atmosphere. As the pressure builds, the relief valve will open more and more to relieve the excess. Safety valves should also be installed on outlets from compressors to immediately prevent the compressor from damaging the machine or system as a result of over-pressurizing it. Safeties open when relief valves can't control the over-pressure. These three very different valves are not interchangeable.
