Stalactites and stalagmites are slightly different in their growth and do not depend on each other to grow.
A stalactite grows when calcium carbonate and other ions precipitate out from the groundwater.
A stalagmite forms when calcium carbonate and other ions precipitate out from the groundwater. This water does not need to come from stalactites.
When a stalactite and a stalagmite do grow with one above the other, they are called a column when they meet.
Yes, a stalactite can grow without a corresponding stalagmite below it. If there is a river flowing under the water seeping through the rock, the stalactite will grow while the river will sweep away the mineral rich water.
It depends very much on the conditions within the individual cave passage, particularly the CO2 proportion in the air, and the rate at which the water with its dissolved calcite comes through the passage roof. If the drops fall as soon as they emerge from their inlet, the evaporation hence precipitation of calcite, will occur on the floor.
you couldn't see without it and you would die in a matter of minutes without it
No, no. Without air, you hear nothing, although without air, that is seldom your main concern.
World Without Sun was created in 1964.

I'm not sure if anyone can give a definitive answer but the rate at which the feed water leaves the roof may be a factor.

Yes, and in fact they form without wool thread at all, which is just as well, because sheep tend to be rather fatally poor at caving.
Requirements: .......................................... Minimizer from the Store .................................................................... Turn on the Minimizer. Go as far to the left of the boat as you can without falling off. When you see a stalactite crumble and shake, quickly run to the right. Go to the back of the boat again. Duck and wait until the flaming skull flies over you. Run to the right of the boat and when you see the two eyes in the river, jump.(Tip: Don't jump too early or too late.) Repeat this 3 more times.
Few cases are on record. The cave explorers have got rabies, when they entered the South American caves, inhabited with millions of vampire bats. But this mode of transmission is questionable. As the vampire bats bite, there teeth are like hypodermic needles. So the person may not note the bite. secondly the caves are very dangerous and the explorers must be psychologically tense at times. They may not note the bite by the bats in such a situation.
I can't speak for Carlsbad specifically but as a general rule... No you cannot touch any bats in any cave! Unless you are a genuine biologist studying the animals in a serious project. Nor should you disturb them by, e.g. shining your lamp directly at them. In the UK unauthorised, deliberate handling of any bat anywhere without appropriate permission is illegal, but like wilfully collecting stalactites, it is regarded as wrong anyway throughout the caving world. The Playboy Club Rule applies: Look, Don't Touch

Yes, without is normally a preposition.Example: You went on vacation without me!It is more rarely an adverb, used without an object, as in We had to do without.
What are you asking? Without a kid without a parent?
