Some states have incorporated the Confederate Battle Flag into their state flags as a mark of their heritage. At this point I think the secret reason they still have it is because they find it so much fun to watch people get their panties in a twist about it.

Why is the confederate flag so constroversial?

Much of the controversy comes from misunderstandings. First, what flag do they have issues with? Most people when asked what the "Confederate Flag" looks like would point to a red banner with a blue cross corner to corner with 13 stars in the cross. Some people even refer to this flag as the "stars and bars" because it has white stars on blue bars. Both of those beliefs are FALSE! The flag that most people think of as the "Confederate Flag" is the Confederate Navy Jack (rectangular flag) or the Confederate Cavalry or Artillery flag (square flag). There were three (3) official flags of the Confederate States of America and this flag was NOT one of them. The Confederate Stars and Bars (first flag of the Confederate States of America) looks nothing like the Confederate Navy Jack or Cavalry flags. Take a look at Georgia's state flag. Except for the state seal in the circle of 13 stars, that is the first flag of the Confederacy, the "Stars and Bars." The second point: Some will say that the "Confederate Flag" stands for slavery or racism. Others will say that the "Confederate Flag" stands for rebels and "red necks." The association of the "Confederate Flag" with controversy may have begun with "white supremacy" movements of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) founded in the Southern States in 1865 by Confederate veterans.

When was the first union made?

The Union Jack is the flag of Great Britain. I will assume you mean the Union vs. the Confederate flag of the American Civil War. Although Kansas attained status on January 29, 1861 as the 34th state, Ft. Sumter was still flying the 33-star flag when it was bombarded in April. Therefore, it could be argued just as effectively that the first official flag of the U.S. (Union) Army of the Civil War was the older, 33-star banner or the newer, 34-star version. However, the official flag of the Union when war broke out was the 34-star Kansas-inclusive version adopted at the end of January, 1861. Many versions followed, some representing states and others brigades and various military units.

What were some of the regional differences that divided the northern and southern states after independence?

Why was the confederate flag different from the US flag?

You don't want the same flag as your enemy but they somewhat are similar just like the U.S and Britians flag with the colors. The Confederate States of America (CSA) was formed of the southern states that seceded from the United States of America in 1861 at the onset of the Civil War. Originally there were 7 states then later 11 states in the Confederacy. The first CSA national flag had 7, 11, and then 13 stars in a circle. Two border states (Missouri and Kentucky) did not secede from the Union but had representatives on both the USA and CSA legislatures. That is why there were 13 stars on the first CSA flag. During the Civil War the CSA was not part of the USA, they were considered a separate nation. During the history of the Confederacy there were three different "official" flags of the CSA. After the defeat of the Confederate Army of Virginia and arrest of their President Jefferson Davis the southern states were returned to the United States of America.Read more: Why_is_the_confederate_flag_different_from_the_US_flag

What is the difference between a confederate flag and a confederate battle flag?

The official flag of the Confederacy was a blue square in the upper left corner with a variance of 7 to 13 stars in a circle, two thick red stripes top and bottom and an equally thick white stripe in the middle of the two. It is often refereed to as the "stars and bars". The confederate battle flag was the same design as the confederate navy jack as seen in some other variants of the confederate flag, but elongated to form a rectangular shape. the battle flag is the most widely known confederate flag.

Why did the Georgia state flag change in 2001?

The Georgia state flag used from 1956-2001 featured a Confederate Battle flag, which some Georgia residents found offensive due to its contemporary use as a symbol of white supremacy. From 2001-2003 a redesigned flag was used, but was ranked the worst in a survey of North American flags. A new flag was drafted in 2003 and is still in use today.

Is it illegal to fly the confederate flag?

No, it's not illegal, although some people think it is racist and immoral.

Do they fly the confederate flag in the US?

For some values of "they", and some values of "the confederate flag", yes.The Battle Flag of the Army of Tennessee, the one that's red with white stars on a dark blue saltire (diagonal cross) that most people automatically think of when they think "confederate flag", is flown by some people as a symbol of their heritage, or in some cases as a symbol of a heritage they wish they had. It's also flown by some racist morons.Distinguishing between the two groups can, in some cases, be problematic, since the racist morons like to hide behind the "heritage" folks. Also:The current Georgia state flag is quite similar to the first Confederate national flag (the "Stars and Bars"); it's essentially identical to the 13-star variant of the Stars and Bars with an additional emblem in the center of the circle of stars.Mississippi's state flag is a bit like the secondConfederate national flag (the "Stainless Banner"), except that instead of a pure white field the field is divided into three bars, from top to bottom blue, white, and red.

Does the rebel flag have anything to do will blacks?

Yes, the Confederate flag, often called the rebel flag, is a symbol of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, which fought to preserve slavery in the Southern states. It has been adopted by some white supremacist and hate groups and is seen by many as a symbol of racism and oppression towards black people.
