yes it can Yes, they certainly can. Vesuvius and Krakatoa are two famous examples in history, and there are more recent volcanic eruptions that have taken lives as well. People seem to get complacent, especially when eruptions can be separated by hundreds or even thousands of years. Fifty seven people died during the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Up to 800 died in the Philippines when Pinatubo erupted in 1991. There are many others. See links
