The word 'stars' is a noun, the plural from for the noun 'star'. Example sentence:The stars seem much brighter in the countryside away from the city lights. The word 'stars' is also a verb (star, stars, starring, starred); and an adjective (a star athlete, a star performer, etc.)
In clear skies outside of the city, because all of the city lights take away from the brightness of the stars.
They are still there. But they are hidden by the pollution and by the lights. The city of Lights has so many lights that it overpowers the light of the stars.
If you live near a major city the starlight is likely drowned out be the bright city lights. Smog could also obscure the stars.
You see more stars in the country because you are farther away from the bright city lights that drown out the dimmer light of the stars.

Any city with lots of lights does not make it easy to see stars. The best place to see the stars would be in the countryside or at sea! best place i saw the milky way was in the middle of the sea somewhere in south America. or you can just go to Los Angeles in Hollywood :)
