The earth has a magnetic core, so it has magnetic north and south poles. It also has an atmosphere made up of oxygen and nitrogen (among other things). Charged particles from the sun are attracted to the magnetic poles and they collide with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen. The collisions produce the light that makes up the auroras.

The particles that come from the Sun, called neutrinos, hit the Earth constantly. These particles excite atoms of gases in our atmosphere. When excitation happens, electrons from the atom are promoted from the ground state to a higher energy level because they absorb the energy from the neutrinos. When these electrons come back to the ground state(called de-excitation), they lose the energy previously gained from the neutrinos. This energy is emitted as visible light at different wavelengths(thus, different colors).
