The earth has a magnetic core, so it has magnetic north and south poles. It also has an atmosphere made up of oxygen and nitrogen (among other things). Charged particles from the sun are attracted to the magnetic poles and they collide with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen. The collisions produce the light that makes up the auroras.
The particles that come from the Sun, called neutrinos, hit the Earth constantly. These particles excite atoms of gases in our atmosphere. When excitation happens, electrons from the atom are promoted from the ground state to a higher energy level because they absorb the energy from the neutrinos. When these electrons come back to the ground state(called de-excitation), they lose the energy previously gained from the neutrinos. This energy is emitted as visible light at different wavelengths(thus, different colors).

Aurora Australis or 'Southern lights'.
The northern ones are called the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and the southern ones are called the Southern Lights, or the Aurora Australis.
the glowing region in the atmosphere is called an aurora. An aurora example of an aurora would be aurora borealis or the northern lights, or the aurora australis which is also known as the southern lights. *<=D
The aurora borealis night-sky displays are also known as the northern lights, or the northern polar lights.(or the southern (polar) lights, depending on where you live)In the Southern Hemisphere this phenomenon is also known as the aurora australis.
The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights).
Curtain aurora formation and corona aurora.
The Northern Lights. Borealis is "north" and aurora is similar to "lights" so "northern lights". There is such thing as Aurora Australis that occurs in the south.
"The Northern Lights" is Aurora Borealis's commonly used name.
The northern ones are called the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and the southern ones are called the Southern Lights, or the Aurora Australis.
the aurora borialis means the northern lights and the arora australis means the southeren lights. they only appear at the poles.

Aurora australis for Southern, Aurora Borealis for Northern
There's an Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) at the north magnetic pole and an Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) at the south magnetic pole.
Aurora are generated when magnetic storms from the sun hit the earth's atmosphere and interact with it. Both polar regions experience aurora: Aurora Australis occurs in the Southern Hemisphere, and Aurora Borealis occurs in the Northern Hemisphere.
The dancing lights of the ionosphere are known as auroras. In the Northern Hemisphere they are called the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. In the Southern Hemisphere they are known as the Aurora Australialis or Southern Lights.
