Why do some Catholic churches cover the statue of Jesus with a red robe?
Before his crucifixion, the Roman soldiers mocked Jesus by dressing him a "robe of scarlet". Actually, prior to Vatican II, it was the custom to cover all statues and paintings in the church with violet from Passion Sunday until the Vigil Mass on Easter Sunday as a symbol of penance and sorrow. No flowers or any other form of decoration was allowed during these days also. Some churches still follow the custom today.

In the pre-Vatican II Church all adornments were removed from the church and statues covered on Passion Sunday and remained covered until the Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday. Today, few Churches practice this but those that do cover the statues on Palm Sunday which is now combined with Passion Sunday.
