The citizens of the United States do vote in a President. They vote for the President they want their state to vote for. Then their state votes for whoever got the most votes. Just because voting for US President is not done strictly by majority rule does not mean it is unfair.
Citizens should vote, because electoral votes are cast based on the what the state votes. If more people of the state vote for the democratic candidate, then the electoral college votes for that candidate so the people do actually have a say in it. The electoral votes just make things easier.
A much better reason to vote though is that people fought for the right to vote and many died for it. They did all that so that people in the future would have the privalege to vote. The right to vote shouldn't be taken for granted.
US citizens who are registered to vote elect delegates to the Electoral College, and the Electoral College elects the president and VP.
That was a compromise between those who thought that Congress should select the President and those who thought the voting public should elect him.
Electoral votes are the type of votes that actual elect the president.
