Nations achieve a high standard of living when the population is well educated. It is an established fact that communities with higher standards of education also tend to have higher proportions of atheists in the population. Thus, the direct correlation is not between Atheism and standards of living, but between atheism and education level. Both atheism and high living standards are likely consequences of better education.
Because materialism and atheism go hand in hand. The higher standard of living also translates to more entertainment, more folly, more sinning, and less leisure or motivation to ever actually invest time in thinking through the big issues of life. People are so busy with work, with their i-phones, with their gadgets and travel and everything else, that they never stop to actually care about where they came from and where they're going. Most people who accept evolution have never actually looked into the matter. Those who investigate thoroughly may find that Evolution, which in fact remains a theory, is fraught with difficulties and open to dispute by people who choose to avoid ignoring its problems. It can neither be proven nor demonstrated in the lab (in its broader sense of giving rise to new organs or species).

Non-religious people find more productive activities in which to engage their time and resources. They are more reality based, working to improve and enrich this life experience for everyone. In addition to being better educated, statistics show that atheistic societies are among the most developed, wealthiest, most democratic, most free, most peaceful, healthiest, most egalitarian, most environmentally mindful, least wasteful, least corrupt, least violent, and least judgmental societies in the world.
Those attributes spill over to their criminal justice systems where there is less imprisonment, comprehensive drug and alcohol abuse treatment, psychiatric treatment when needed, education, job training and strong community support for those who end up in the criminal justice systems.

The United Arab Emirates and Kuwait are very close when it comes to standard of living as they are both considered developed countries. However, Kuwait wins by having the 35th highest living standard in the world. Saudi Arabia doesn't come close with the 59th highest living standard in the world. It is a developing country. An important note is that in all three of these countries, there is a huge disparity between the wealthy and the poor. These "living standards" are usually judged by averages and the life of poor Emiratis, Kuwaitis, and Saudis, is not equivalent to poor Western Europeans by a long shot.
