Usually this is caused by the brake light switch being out of proper adjustment [most likely], but it also could be caused by a defective switch [less likely].
Is it when the ignition lights on the brake lights are stuck on? If so adjust the brake light switch at the pedal.hope this helps Answer: Its the park lights. The vehicle is probably in park.
brake light switch is bad
Could be the brake light switch or fuse.

are you sure it is the brake lights and not the tail lights. if it is the brake lights you most likely have a short some where. go to a auto eletrican It is the brake lights which turn on. Short in the switch or the wiring?
try adjusting switch above brake pedal
Defective brake light switch, or it is out of adjustment. Located on the brake pedal arm. there is a recall on the brake lite switch , check your local dealer..
The brake light switch is either out of adjustment or defective.
brake lights say lit after ignition has been shut off. lights shut off after hitting the brakes.
You do not need the key in the ignition to make lights work. They are "hot" all the time. The reason you Sid marker lights are coming on at the same time is because you have a bad ground in one of your brake lights. It's allowing electricity to jump from the brake lights to the tail light circuit. Take the brake lights apart, clean up all the rust and make sure they "ground" to bare metal. Problem cured.
Usually the lights will be always on the only way to turn them off manually is when you engage the parking brake, if you need them off during the day time you can pull up the parking brake to the first notch and it shouldn't affect the brake at all. That's how I do it on my 98 jetta at least
it depends what year this jetta is? 93-99's will have the fuse on the drivers side underneith near the petals...you should find it there
