Best Answer

Because they cannot hear the correct way to say words, nor can they hear themselves talk in the same way that others do, so it is hard to improve their enunciation.

How can I learn to communicate with a hearing impaired individual?

You can learn to communicate with a hearing impaired individual by using methods like learning sign language, using facial expressions and gestures, speaking clearly and facing the person, providing written communication when needed, and being patient and understanding. It's also helpful to ask the person how they prefer to communicate and to be open to learning new ways to effectively communicate with them.

What is proper etiquette when speaking to a deaf or hard of hearing or deafened person?

Look them directly in the eye as you speak to them since many hearing impaired people can lip read. Don't try to speak in an exaggerated manner (as if speaking to a child or mentally impaired person), or you will offend them, since they are hearing impaired and not mentally impaired. They will let you know if they are able to understand what you are saying, and they may use hand gestures to communicate with you if they haven't learned to vocalize. Never assume or ask a deaf person if they can lip read. That is considered offensive by many. But if they can't hear you,, they can't hear you and the best way to facilitate communication is by writing to each other on a piece of paper. On another note,, the ASL alphabet is quite easy to learn and after some practice, you'll find you can spell words quite quickly. If you know the alphabet in ASL, the you are able to communicate with deaf people. It would also not be hard at all to learn some basic signs. The link at the bottom of the page can help you.

Why might a person with a brain injury be able to understand the speech of others but not be able to speak?

This could occur because the brain injury may have affected the areas involved in motor control and speech production, such as Broca's area in the frontal lobe. Understanding speech relies more on the brain regions responsible for language comprehension, such as Wernicke's area in the temporal lobe, which may have been less affected by the injury. Thus, the individual may have intact comprehension abilities but struggle with producing speech due to the damage in motor speech areas.

Can an anosmic taste?

Since an anosmic cannot smell food, their ability to taste is impaired. A person with a fully functioning sense of smell uses it to identify food and sense flavor. However, since 40% of taste consists of information that is relayed from only the taste buds, an anosmic is technically able to taste. It is just impaired.
