Your Shift key may be stuck down. Also, on certain keyboards, particularly on laptops, different combinations of Shift, Caps Lock, Num Lock, Fn (function) and Ctrl can cause the machine to get into a funny state. If all else fails, try rebooting your machine. If it still persists, there may be a problem with your keyboard.
