The corpse is a reminder or rather a foreshadowing of their own fate. They avoid it bur Henry wants to peer into his eyes. Henry begins to question himself and the values by which he measures his actions. Issues that were once so etched in stone by male bravado were up for debate. Courage, mortality, victory and futility now swarmed around Henry's head as he came closer to battle.

In "The Red Badge of Courage," the ranks open to avoid the corpse because the soldiers fear that others may collapse upon seeing the gruesome sight of a fallen comrade, potentially causing panic and disorder within the ranks. By allowing the soldiers to divert their attention away from the dead soldier, the officers strive to maintain order and preserve morale among the troops. Additionally, moving past the fallen comrade quickly allows the soldiers to focus on their mission and the present dangers of the battlefield.

How many police badges can you earn?

If you are referring to the badge that is issued to a law enforcement officer, they only get one, typically with the officers "badge number" affixed to, or engraved on, it. If they are promoted and move to a higher rank they will be issued another badge which reflects their new rank and new number. They can "earn" as many badges as the ranks to which they may be promoted. Upon promotion they surrender their former badge back to the department or agency and it and the number are re-assigned to a new officer. Badge numbers are customarily never 'retired' from use unless the officer that carried it at the time was killed in the line of duty.

What year did the Arrow of Light become the highest rank in Cub Scouting?

When the Cub Scouts was first established in 1930 the three ranks were Wolf, Bear and Lion. In 1941 the WEBELOS badge was added for 10 year old boys who had finished the Lion badge (it went by age then - not school year as we do it today). Its symbol was what we now use for the Arrow of Light. In 1967 the Lion Rank was dropped and the 10 year old Cubs were known as WEBELOS. The badge still looked like our Arrow of Light. Around 1972 they changed the name of the WEBELOS rank badge to the Arrow of Light. The five ranks as we know them today, Bobcat, Wolf, Bear , WEBELOS, and Arrow of Light were established in in 1978.

Why tenderfoot second class and first class rank do not require any merit badge?

Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class ranks are designed for young men to learn the basics to take them through the program and live up to the goals and ideals of scouting. Much like a sponge, in these early ranks you suck up all the information, so as you go to higher ranks you can turn from taking in, to giving back. This is why the other ranks require service, and leadership. Merit badges are designed to expand that base of knowledge, and while they can be earned at any rank, are then applied when you reach Star and above.
