I think its for the southern cross, a way the stars line up it creates a cross. It can be located only in the southern hemisphere.
Because that is the proper way to hang it. If you hang it any other way it is disrespectful to America and the flag must be destroyed, and also it is a sin to hang it backwards
When looking at the vertically hung flag, the stars should be on the top left.
