If they didn't, and the wires touched, all energy would be spent on a short-circuit at the point of contact rather than on powering the appliance. Also, if a bare wire touches the appliance, that itself would start to carry an electric charge, giving anybody who touched the appliance a nasty and dangerous shock.

How much energy is wasted by leaving an appliance on standby?

Leaving an appliance on standby means it is using 40% of the energy it would if it was actually running.

What is the difference between a energy efficient appliance and a standard appliance?

The greater the number of energy stars on the appliance label the more energy efficient it is. The label will also tell you how much energy the appliance you're purchasing will use in a year. You can use this information to calculate how much this appliance will cost you annually. Most electric companies (e.g. Ameren) also provide easy to use energy calculators that allow you to compare appliances savings.

Is insulation a method of heat transfer?

Insulation is the exact opposite. Conduction is a method of energy transfer, insulation is the reduction or prevention of energy transfers

Its resistance.

What is the difference between chemical energy and thermal energy?

Chemical energy is essentially potential energy, and does not require insulation to keep it from depleting to the Universe at large. Thermal energy is largely "lost" energy, somewhat between kinetic energy (some work might be able to be recovered) and entropy.

What energy transformation does an electrical appliance carry out?

"Electrical appliance" is a very general term - there are electrical appliances that do very different things. In general, the electrical appliance converts the electrical energy into another form, depending on the appliance's purpose: a television produces light and sound energy, a mixer produces mechanical energy, a heater or shower head produces heat energy. All appliances will also produce some waste energy."Electrical appliance" is a very general term - there are electrical appliances that do very different things.
