The oldest part of Madrid was constructed in the 1500s, during the reign of the Habsburgs. Since the Habsburgs were an Austrian Royal House (that inherited Spain through relations to the prior kings of Spain), the portion of Madrid that was built while the Habsburgs were in power is called "Madrid de los Austrias" or "Madrid from the times of the House of Austria" in recognition of the Habsburgs' origin.
