it was originaly owned by the dutch, then the English took over. its new owner was the duke of york. that's why its called New York.

well im british so you might have a different view. we are learning about the british empire in class and york is a place in the british isles so we went to America and land at the not yet existent New York and called where we landed New York. named after york. in Britain.

Because that is its name, just as much as "New York" is. That's why the word "city" is capitalized. Because it's part of the name.

The words "city" and "state" are added to New York City and New York State in order to differentiate between the two. Otherwise, people can get confused about which one you're referring to.

The word "state" in New York State is capitalized, for the same reason the word "city" in New York City is capitalized: because names are proper nouns, and the words "city" and "state" are part of the name.

Many American cities were originally named after British cities. New York is named after York, England; New England; Birmingham, and many more. Though 'old' is used in the question, they are not as old as the original British place names.
