The English developed the shortened form "pants" for "pantaloons" (trousers) as worn by people in Venice. These were named for St. Pantaleon, the patron saint of the city.

Although other garments had a shorter length, and pantaloon itself was used to describe knee-length breeches at one point, the application of shorts to "short pants" came later.
