Shih Tzu is a romanization for Lion (獅子) in Chinese.

Note that the romanization in Shih Tzu is not commonly used today. The standard romanization is Shi Zi .

This is because Shih Tzu (狮子) means "lion" in Chinese. The breed name refers to the resemblance between the Shih Tzu's longhaired coat and the lion's shaggy mane.
