Why Muslim women wear the hijab has become controversial?

Because in Islam, Muslim men don't wear a hijab. Only Muslim females do. The girls have to cover everything except their faces and their hands. They HAVE to cover their hair. The Muslim men only cover from their belly button to their knees. They also may wear an Islamic hat or something like a hijab that some Saudi Arabians wear.

It is not compulsory for Muslim women to wear the hijab. I travelled in Bosnia, and wasan't aware that I was passing through a mainly Muslim area, neither men nor women dressed differently from other eastern European people.

Muslims wear the hijab because it was written in the quran ( Muslim bible) god said that girls are suppose to wear. so we obey god and follow what he/she said. if you do not wear a hijab when its end of the world you will be in fire carried by your hair and its really painful and i don't want that happening to the ones who don't wear it. I don't think that most people object to it as a choice, only as a forced requirement with violence as the punishment for not wanting to, or not doing so.

Some women prefer wearing a hijab to western clothes. By wearing a head covering when in the company of others than the immediate family some women feel more comfortable, perhaps because there is a different standard of intimacy, and showing hair to outsiders might cause concern. If a woman wants to wear a hijab, or a habit, or a bonnet, or a wig... or not wear one, for whatever reasons, including religious ones, we should respect that choice.

Men are allowed to dress casually, but women are expected to cover their hair in public at all times, and in some cultures, not even show their face. This seems to many people who are not conservative Muslims as quite discriminatory.
