Early television broadcasts were transmitted on VHF (very high frequency) radio channels. They moved to UHF (ultra high frequency) and have remained on that band since. These bands are used for terrestrial broadcasts.
Satellite broadcasts use even higher frequencies.

Signals in the VHF frequencies have a tendency to follow the curve of the earth and bend around hills where UHF tends to travel more in a straight line.
