Carpenter Bees - they drill little holes the size of a dime/nickel to lay lots of eggs so you will have even more bees in the fall. They are very noisey and you can't miss them - they are quite large. Beware as they are pretty determined to keep their new homes. Must treat holes with pesticide dust and later plug all holes. cover the wood with Paint or aluminum siding to keep them away in future -- but you have to treat those living there now first.

Different types of bees exist. You may be familiar with honeybees that live in hives and produce honey. The bees that live in hives have one queen, thousands of workers, and fewer drones. The bees that burrow in wood are a different type of insect that are distantly related. They are solitary bees. They do not have a hive. Instead a solitary bee digs a hole. She puts pollen in the hole and lays an egg in the hole. Then she puts more pollen in the hole and lays another egg, and so forth. The eggs hatch, become larvas, pupas, and adults. The adult females then repeat the cycle. Although a group may burrow close together, each bee does her own thing. The males simply hang around to fertilize the females. They have nothing to do with drilling the holes or collecting the pollen.

Wasp chew on the wood to accumulate wood to build there nest. They get the chewed wood and lightly moisten it and mold it to make there nest.
