The article link above states that it might also have to do with pesticides and fertilizers, but I doubt it applies to watermelons here in North America.
Just had one of mine split open..after researching it I believe it split due to excessive moisture. I read a few ago that watermelon takes extra water when fruiting so I oick up the watering...I have been watering every other day...flooding the area...In all the webpages I have looked at tells me they are prone to this.
