The Romans and the Greeks thought that the planets were stars and named each according to their gods. They thought that the immortal soul of their gods went and literally inhabited the stars. So it makes sense that by calling celebrities 'stars' (as well as by revering them as we do in all forms of media) we are very literally idolizing them.
look at the flags of the world and then look at ancient history. it is a reference to the star of Athena. the other crap mentioned is just a lazy answer.

French stars are called "étoiles" if you mean celestial bodies. Celebrities may be called "étoiles", but it would appear old-fashioned. Most people call them stars as you do in English.
