He became the first nonwhite President.
To many, there were other more significant reasons, including the removal of an administration and political party that had failed the American people. The significance was not just about the color of the newly elected president's skin. This was another good step on the road to eliminate racism and bigotry and inspire new generations toward the American dream, but not the main significance of the change.
The policies of the prior administration had created world tension and extreme hate of America by people in many countries. Terrorists had attacked us on US soil and killed thousands due to the poorly considered and applied foreign policy.
The Republican economic policies (trickle down) had taken us to the brink of a major depression and unbalance in the wealth in our country to the point that the middle class was being obliterated. Jobs were being outsourced to other countries. All benefit was being given to the wealthy and limited assistance was available to those in need. (e.g., Katrina, healthcare, lack of jobs, etc.)
Outrageously expensive wars were being fought due to lies from the administration about the reason for the US attacks (non-existent weapons of mass destruction). Torture of prisoners of war was accepted by the prior administration and used despite the long-held world policy against it.
Economic policies had given banks and Wall Street permission for economic rape. Regulations were not in place to prevent it or were not being enforced. People were being given risky loans and then the banks bet against them knowing they would fail. Foreclosures were unfair and some illegal, putting people on the streets, homeless.
The large corporations (e.g., oil companies) were polluting without controls. Regulations were ignored and not applied where they should have been. Species were becoming extinct and habitats were destroyed to the point of no return.
Civil liberties and Constitutional rights were being ignored. These are just some of the reasons that electing a new party and a new President who was not espousing the same failed policies was a critical and significant event in our history. People rose up to make their voices heard and vote in a new administration and political party and vote out the failed economic and other policies of the prior Bush-Cheney administration that would have been being continued under another Republican administration.
