Plants draw water directly through channels in their stems to distribute it to their cells. If you add food coloring to the water, it is carried along with the water as an inert substance that is deposited throughout the flower. You can see this in the petals of a light colored flower. You can also do this with celery if you use a high enough concentration of red or blue food coloring. Commercially, this is sometimes used to dye carnations different colors.

well its quite ovious but....

when you put normal water into the plant it feeds its petals so they dont die. but when you put [red die lets say] then when the petals get fed they will turn a different colour.
