Familiars are believed to be a physical embodiment of a spirit guide and/or an intermediary between worlds. I personally feel that the concept of familiars is a stereotype. I don't discount that it is possible for a spirit to take the form of an animal and act as a guide or intermediary for a witch but television and books have purported this notion to the point of it being stereotypical. A familiar could be a cat but could also just as easily be a lady bug. The majority of newbie witches feel the need to go out and get a cat name it salem and call it a familiar because they are uneducated as to what it a familiar actually is and are trying to fit into what they have been told a witch is supposed to be. I have been a witch my entire life and have yet to have a "familiar" in the sense that the world thinks of them as. I don't even particularly like cats. I'm more of a bird person.
Witches boiled little children and ate bats and kept their familiars as pets.
They were called their familiars
Witches' familiars are believed to assist them in their magical practices by providing guidance, protection, and spiritual support. They are often seen as companions with a special connection to the spiritual world, helping the witch in their rituals and spellwork. Familiars can take various forms, such as animals or spirits, and are considered to be valuable allies in the practice of witchcraft.
The stereotype is for witches to have familiars, and a mole would fit the part of a travelling companion. Wort is presumably what they have before the beer finishes fermenting.
2, under suspicion of being familiars because they were owned by accused witches.
The cat is rewarded and becomes human...a familiar to guide other familiars to help and guide new witches.
It was commonly believed that witches had companion animals that were their "familiars" and they used them to spy on people or to carry out other witchcraft goals.
"The Familiars" by Stacey Halls has 368 pages.
Witches were thought to have animal "familiars" who would help them contact the devil etc. A cat was a good choice as many elderly women have cats. Often cas and their elderly lady owners are a bit strange, which didn't help them seeming normal.
The Familiars - film - was created in 2014.
Animals were not accused of witchcraft. The animals seen around accused witches were assumed to be spirits known as "familiars" that were used to keep the "witch" in direct contact with the "devil".
I have a feeling it is because of the fact that one of the most popular familiars for witches is a black cat. And back then they were mightily afraid of witches...i think that's where the Friday the 13 superstition came from as well. But of course not all witches are evil, so i don't think the black cat superstition really is true
