Woodpeckers peck on houses for several reasons. They are looking for a mate, so they peck loudly to attract a mate and maintain their territory. They could be pecking on the side of a home looking for insects, this is why it is important to have a pest control program in place. They will also peck holes in your home to build their homes and store their acorns or food. The best way to get rid of them is to either block them by hanging plastic bird netting about 4 inches out from the side of a home, attaching it to the eave. You can also use bright shiny things like flashtape and scare balloons to frighten them away.

if the wood is bad or rotted they might try to make a home there, but normally they use something that resonates sound well to make a drumming sound with their beak to attract a mate or defend/announce their territory.

Since there are most likely no insects in there to eat, they are probably trying to attract a mate by " drumming " on something that resonates sound well.
