The body is decomposing (rotting flesh) as well as bodily fluids. This smell is something ANYONE would sense because there is no other smell like it. Often forensic teams have to use Vicks Vapo Rub under their nose to get near a body or to look at a body in the morgue. The smell is because the body is decomposing, and all of the insects and other things are feeding off of it.
