LCD = Liquid Crystal Display. Liquid crystals (LCs) are a state of matter that have the properties common to both liquids and solids. The molecules are crystal-like, but they flow like a liquid. By polarising the crystals with electric current, their orientations can be shifted. These phase transitions are such that light can either be blocked or allowed to pass through as if transparent. Colour filters can then be used to generate individual red, green and blue pixels, making it possible to produce animated full-colour images suitable for flat-panel computer displays and TV monitors.
However, LCDs require a backlight, so they cannot display pure-black (dark grey at best). LEDs (light emitting diodes) overcome this problem with a much brighter display and deeper blacks, giving a much higher contrast ratio. The lack of a backlight also means they can be very much thinner.
