Most people cry when they are unhappy. Losing someone you love or even someone you knew can make you unhappy as you think of what the person did in their life and what they could have done if they had had more time to live. It's sad to think of someone that you cared about and realize that you will never be able to see or talk to them again. Often people are struck by the finality of death and cry even if they didn't seem to know the deceased person very well or seemed to care about them very much. It might also force a person to think about death and see it on a more personal level, which can make people scared, which might in turn lead them to cry.
