Best Answer

When livestock become no longer productive, have health issues or have a nasty temperament that a producer doesn't want to have to handle on a daily basis, these animals are culled and sold. There are certain expectations that a producer has for his or her animals, and when any of these animals do not meet these expectations, such as coming back in heat on time (or at all), have poor mothering ability, take more feed to care for than other animals, etc., it is no longer feasible to keep these animals because of the costs incurred from having to care for these animals. Most producers are in the business of raising animals for food and not as a humane rescue society, and thus are needing these animals to bring in money in order to keep doing what they do and to keep caring for these animals. To most folks who are not involved in agriculture this seems cold and cruel, but they will quickly find out, once they go bankrupt trying to keep all their excess stock, that this is the best option they have to keep out of the red.

Animals don't live forever, nor do they last forever. They have what is called a life-span, and often through this life span their bodies and health deteriorate to the point that they are not worth the extra money to care for in the herd.

Animals are also culled if they have a bad temperament towards the handler and/or other animals (bulls and cows with calves are culled if they are too aggressive; others are culled if they are too flighty or have an abnormal fear response to humans). Other things include difficult birth (being proven that it wasn't the bull's fault after all, for example in cattle), prolapse issues, mothering ability issues (mother rejects her offspring and won't let them/it suckle, or, especially with pigs, the mother eats her offspring), milking ability issues (in beef and dairy herds, cows or heifers with lower than average milking ability or, with beef cows, females do not produce enough milk for their calf; same can be said for goat and sheep herds), and poor libido or fertility (libido in bulls; fertility in bulls can be compromised by injury to the penis or the testicles; some bulls are born with low fertility. In females, fertility can be genetic, or can be due to poor condition and age).

Health issues that cannot be fixed, but do not pose a threat to human health, are other reasons that animals are culled.

What_are_the_advantages_to_culling_wild_animalscontrol and animal health.

Hunting season and hunting licenses help to reduce the population of What_are_the_advantages_to_culling_wild_animalsin areas where natural predators are rare. If this didn't occur, many of these animals would likely starve to death in the winter since food is scarce and the What_are_the_advantages_to_culling_wild_animalscouldn't support such large numbers. Certain states allow a hunter to shoot more than one animal, this is because those areas have more of those animals than other areas. If, by chance, this were to change, so would the number of animals a hunter may kill.

In some cases, animal populations may also be culled in the What_are_the_advantages_to_culling_wild_animalsof an outbreak of a disease.

It is removing animals that are inferior in terms of productivity, health status, temperament, etc. and removing them from the farm by selling them. Culling is primarily reserved for breeding herds, not non-breeding herds such as with feedlot cattle or feeder pigs.
