While studying, your brain is in effort and above all - needs more oxygen. Yawning increases the amount of air intake, hence the amount of oxygen entering your brain.

I'd recommend also drinking a lot of water, eating a bit of food which carries a punch, such as nuts, root vegetables, cold cuts (salami etc.) and just a bit of chocolate. Stay away from coffee, tea and sweets, as their effect is short and they add strain to your body.
