After parking your car, let the engine cool down with all the accessories turned off (lights, A/C, stereo), but with the engine still running for a few minutes. This allows the engine's cooling system to pump water and coolant in and around the engine, giving it ample time to cool down, and thus helping to prevent added wear and tear. If you shut down the engine immediately, the coolant water will stop circulating around the engine and it will continue to heat up, stressing all its internal parts.
