It is true that a switch is used to open and close a circut.
It's just a pony acetylene-type torch, to make creme brulees and stuff. Just turn the gas on low and light the torch, and adjust the flame as needed.

Either close the circuit, or complete the circuit, should work here.

One reason may be the switch, it's located between the console and the steering wheel. It has a picture of a light bulb on it or above it. Try putting into the down postion. This should make the lights retract after turning them all the way off and not leaving the park lights on.
A switch is fitted to turn off the light whilst the door is closed to avoid wasting electricity and money.
Turn on the ignition switch and then turn it fully clockwise until the engine starts.
