There might be food residue underneath; spilled fat, for example, might not show at a glance but if some is trapped underneath the hotplate it could produce smoke when the hotplate is heated. If you find food trapped underneath and can clean it thoroughly, do so; this should fix the problem. It must be done before you use the hotplate again, as it could be a fire hazard. If you find it is clean underneath, or you are unable to clean it yourself, call a technician to look at it. Don't use the hotplate again until it's been inspected and fixed by a qualified technician.
